Clive is one of the most experienced art directors I have had the pleasure to work with. His attention to detail is what makes him stand out from the rest! I have been lucky enough to work with Clive on a number of shoots & in my opinion we created some of my best work together.  Clive’s experience & commitment are the most valuable things anyone could bring to a shoot. He is not happy until everything is covered & I really admire the way he works.

Ask any photographer and given the opportunity they’ll explain there are art directors and there are Art Directors. Clive is an Art Director, capital A capital D. Totally committed to the imagery and the craft of photography. I was lucky enough to work with Clive on the Rolls-Royce Dawn launch photography, quite a task, and one we both took seriously. Clive’s vision, attention to detail in all aspects of the shoot, from pre-planning to post production was impressive, never allowing even the smallest of details to slip by. The result; photography that we are both rightly proud of. On top of that, he’s one of the good guys. Important when on a shoot for several weeks.

I’ve worked with Clive for 11 years and the first thing to say is: I’ve learnt a lot. 

Clive is a great conceptual art director, over his time at the agency he has worked in two formal, award-winning, creative teams and worked more loosely with many other writers. He has a high level of craft skills but it’s his ability to draw and visualise his ideas that has made him a great asset over the years. It is a great strength to be able to recreate the precise angles of a car, for example, within its proposed location, to convince a client of a route or idea. And I think it’s made a big difference in selling in new ideas or concepts.

He has an exceptional skill and eye as an art director but he really excels in the automotive arena. With a keen eye for detail and a passion for the product, he is capable of assessing a shoot vehicle very quickly to determine how suitable it is and how much time may be needed in post production. He has frequently been involved in colour recommendations with the client for shoot and launch cars. He has a great knowledge of photographers and retouchers and is exceptionally thorough around retouching briefs and mark-ups. He is highly organized. Prior to any shoot he creates detailed shot lists and notes which gives confidence to the wider team, that all the details have been considered. He has worked on Rolls-Royce, BMW and Lexus whilst at Engine and Partners Andrews Aldridge, and created notable campaigns for all three. 

Perhaps most importantly, he is a good guy, and someone who will always go the extra mile to ensure the finished job is great, rather than good. He is passionate about the work and cares enormously. I will miss him a great deal, personally and professionally.
